Robert and Randi Linnegar

Jenny Sages was born in 1933 Shanghai, this is her 19th solo show. Her paintings are discribed by Margot Osborne as poetic organic and intuitive. Jenny is a graduate of the Franklin School of Art where she studied graphic design and illustration. She has won the Portia Geach Prize and the Wynne Prize and has been hung in the Archibald Prize AGNSW 14 times. DVD available and colour catalogue to accompany this exhibition.

John Edwards has had more than 20 solo exhibitions in Australia and has been represented in the Sulman Prize AGNSW , Archibald Prize AGNSW and the Blake Prize. His paintings collage works on paper are inextricably linked to the worlds of imagination and fantasy, to a curious internal utopia. Reality exists in the artists inherent freedom to engage the power of the mind and make images that grapple with shape and line to articulate meaning. OPENING 24 SEPTEMBER 2011

Secret Life of Birds

This work is from an ongoing series of work which uses the bird as motif.

In history, the image of the bird is a metaphor for the prophet, an intermediary between the divine and society, the prophet that can prompt change through message and action.

 

The work is inspired in part by a watercolor made in 1502 by Albrecht Durer. He made a number of beautiful studies of birds and bird wings

My drawing is of the wings of a Boobook Owl that I found. It had been killed by a fox or cat but was in good condition and I could draw the wings, make studies of them in my studio. I was not concerned with ornithological accuracy, I wanted to convey the patterned elements, the texture and the shape, the physical lightness of the form.

 

In the course of making the studies, these disembodied wings took on a  metaphysical and metaphorical dimension.

The absence of the body of the owl gave a sense of pathos and mystery and I realised that in making the drawing I was honouring the birds life rather than its death.

Unlike ‘nature morte’ images,in which the images are inanimate, these wings are ‘reanimated’ like hands waving or the wings of angels floating heavenward! They signify something that is absent and at the same time are ready to transport the secret life of the bird to another place.

On the margins of the paper are brush marks, swatches of exploratory colour and the water stains, drifts and dribbles of paint that reveal the history of the making of the work.

James Jones is an abstract painter living and working in Sydney. He trained at the National Art School and graduated in 1991. He has had nine solo exhibitions this being his tenth. His work has been hung in the en Plein Air Prize 2010, The Blake Prize 2006 and the Waverley Art Prize 2005. Exhibition dates June 28th - July 23

‘On This Island’ is a group show inspired by New Zealand. Curated by Owen Craven and Steve Lopes it will include works by several artists including; Julie Harris, Idris Murphy, David Keeling, Steve Lopes, Euan Macleod, Jan Senbergs, Peter Simpson, Ann Thomson & Judith Van Heeran.

My work explores themes in and around the environment and climate. The animals I use are sourced from around the world typically from existing collections and stock piled skins. No animals have been harmed for the sole purpose of making this body of work. Rod McRae 2010
