Artbank Newsletter 11

By Jackie Dunn
Kensuke Todo completed his first degree in Japan before settling in Australia in 2002. He’s currently busy completing two masters degrees in Visual Arts at the Canberra School of Art as well as a graduate residency. Todo’s elegant and refined steel sculpture is only ever initially ‘abstract’, with the subject of the work soon revealing itself. Here, an escalator or stair turns on itself, suggesting the alienation of mass urbanization that fascinates this exciting emerging sculptor. Artbank also recently purchased a small table piece by Todo: a pair of highly stylized ‘escalators’ heading sadly away from each other.
